Anatomically sound technique, somatic principles, and improvisation combine with athletic yet refined phrase work and exploration. Imagine finding time to breathe then actually having to catch your breath. Imagine leaving sweaty yet centered.
“Mark cares about each dancer individually, giving encouragement and corrections based on his or her needs. He’s always encouraging us to be our greatest – pushing us to our potential. He wants us to discover ourselves and dance from that..."
Loyola Marymount University Dance Major
Classes are offered in the following areas:
Modern Dance: focus is placed on advancing expressivity and exactness through translation tasks which place value on and enhance each dancer’s interpretive instincts. Students are encouraged to learn phrase work as exactly as possible then given an opportunity via translation tasks to alter set movement phrases, thus embodying the movement from a point of personal investment. Working between set and translated material allows the student to experience both exactness and expressiveness and eventually find a place where the two exist simultaneously.
Ballet: focus is placed on the use of artistry to advance and enhance technique. Somatic elements including breath support/awareness, total body connectivity and use of anatomically correct imagery/language are underscored to enrich and develop technical capacity.
Composition/Choreography: compositional elements are investigated as a means to enhance and enliven choreographic choice. Composition/choreography master classes or workshops range from 2 hours to 3 days and include “The Myth of You”, a workshop that guides participants in the discovery of authentic artistic voice through memory, narrative and personal/shared history.
Physically Integrated Dance: partnered with the Dancing Wheels Company & School, offerings include master classes, workshops, residencies and certification in the Dancing Wheels Training Method© which unites the talents of dancers both with and without disabilities.
